We’ve launched a public call for information to gather views on press regulation in the UK.
Ten years ago today, Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave approval to a Royal Charter governing the self-regulation of the press.
The PRP was established as the official independent body responsible for ensuring that regulators of the UK press and other news publishers are independent, properly funded and able to protect the public. Ten years on from the creation of the Royal Charter, the PRP remains determined to achieve those dual goals; to protect the interests of the public and provide access to redress for press harm whilst also upholding freedom of speech. We are independent from Government, the industry or any other third party.
Our Royal Charter requires us to report annually on how well the system is working. In producing our independent report, we would like to consider the full range of perspectives of people interested in and affected by our work. This is why we are today launching our call for information.
If you have any information that you would like us to consider, we are happy to receive feedback in writing, by phone, or face-to-face.
The call for information will close on 15 January 2024.
This year we are intending to explore in our report:
- the Government’s proposals to repeal legislation designed to ensure affordable access to justice for members of the public who have experienced press harm and uphold freedom of speech;
- the standards that news publishers are held to account against; and
- the complexity that the Online Safety Act 2023 creates for press self-regulation.
If you would like to respond on any of these subjects, please read the call for information background and question document here.
